Decision Quality Improvement Will Be Focus of Cooperation

Australia Indonesia Partnership for Justice (AIPJ) and the Directorate General of the Religious Courts continue to run some programs of cooperation. One main focus will be on decision enhancement program.

Purwosusilo, the Director General of Badilag said that good decisions can enhance access of people to justice, particularly for women, children, and marginalized.

He emphasized on the importance of good decision when he discussed with Craig Ewers, the Team Leader of AIPJ in his working room, Wednesday (3/4/2013). Craig Ewers is the new director of AIPJ. He substitutes Nicola Colbran who serves as registrar at Federal Court of Australia.

Accompanied by Binziad Kadafi and Peter Demeij, Craig Ewers visited Badilag’s office to talk about some program of cooperation between two institutions.

“We are promoting some programs relating to rights of legal identity, fair and accessible justice and legal information,” Craig said to Purwosusilo who was accompanied by Farid Ismail, Achmad Cholil and Rahmat Arijaya.

Craig also said that AIPJ continues to hold some mediation trainings for judges and make website assessment. Both programs were successfully conducted in 2011 and 2012.

Purwosusilo agreed that mediation training for judges is very important in providing skills and knowledge for judges on how to mediate parties.

Farid Ismail, the secretary of Badilag realized that many judges had not been involved in such training due to insufficient budget.

Training for Decision Quality Improvement

Badilag plans to hold at least four trainings of decision quality improvement this year. The training will include substantive and procedural law.

Some decisions of the Religious Courts will be chosen to discuss in many perspectives. A comparison study with the best international practices will be also taken.

AIPJ Collects Data on Legal Identity in the Religious Courts

Australia-Indonesia Partnership for Justice (AIPJ) is collecting data on legal identity from some Religious Courts involving South Sulawesi, Flores, Lombok, West Java and North Sumatera. Legal identity consists of birth certificate, marriage certificate and divorce certificate.

Besides, AIPJ is also collecting data from General Courts, Department of Population and Civil, Office of Education, Office of Health, Office of Social, Regional Office of Ministry of Law and Human Rights, Central Bureau of Statistic, Legal Aid, NGO and universities.

According to Wahyu Widiana, a senior adviser of AIPJ, legal identity is absolutely important. It is required to fulfill some basic needs regarding social economic, fair justice, and legal information.

US Embassy Collects Publications on Sharia Court of Aceh

US Embassy has special attention to Sharia Court of Aceh. It collects a lot of publications on this court. For this purpose, Arifin Pramono from Library of Congress Office Southeast Asia, US Embassy visited Sharia Court of Aceh.

“I come to this court for collecting activities published by this court,” he said.

Arifin also said that the Library of Congress is also interested in collecting publication by local governments, universities and other publishers.

According to Drs. H. M. Jamil Ibrahim, SH. MH, Vice Chief of Sharia Court of Aceh, all programs and activities conducted by this court were compiled in some official reports including the Report of Performance Accountability 2011-2012, the Annual Report 2011 -2012 and the Strategic Planning.

Arifin informed that all documents will be a collection of the Library of Congress Washington DC. It will be a valuable treasure on Indonesia and Southeast countries. Researchers and members of American congress will also get benefits from the collection.
